Read-Alouds
Background
Biemiller (2004) offers this simple adjustment to the read-aloud process for helping children in grades K, 1, and 2 to acquire vocabulary.
Description
- Pre-select 8-10 words from a reading selection. Biemiller advises that you do not choose words that are extremely rare.
- During reading, stop and simply explain the meanings of the pre-selected words. Do not expect students to retain all words and definitions.
- (optional) After reading, go through the list of words asking if a student can tell you about the word.
- Keep a list of the words that have been introduced (similar to the word wall concept).
